Glossary
Live Edge
"Now" in a live video. The most recent frame of video the user could be seeing at a given time.
Time Shifting
Time Shifting means that viewers can start watching a live stream at a time earlier than "now," allowing them to join from the beginning a show that's already in progress or to watch a show that's already completed.
VOD - Video on Demand
VOD (or Video on Demand) allows users to access videos without a traditional video playback device and the constraints of a typical static broadcasting schedule. Video can be controlled on demand, when the user chooses.
This is opposed to linear video, in which a video stream plays out a set schedule, and the user is only able to access the video being delivered at the current time.
Linear Video
Linear Video allows users to access videos on a schedule, without control over the playback.
This is opposed to VOD, in which the user has access and control over the content and devices, as well as when they are played back.
CBLS - Cloud Based Live Stream
Plays back a video file as a live stream to all viewers. Allows for enhanced video quality, as well as multiple subtitle tracks, and additional audio tracks.
SRT - Secure Reliable Transport
SRT is a video streaming protocol which that delivers secure low-latency streaming performance over noisy or unpredictable (lossy) networks such as the public internet.
SRT supports AES-256 bit encryption, and is the only approved protocol for streaming content which will be protected by DRM.
RTMP - Real Time Messaging Protocol
RTMP is a communication protocol for streaming media and data over the internet. RTMP is a typical protocol for live streaming on consumer grade devices and is used by most platforms such as Facebook, Twitch, and YouTube. RTMP is not encrypted and should be considered insecure.
RTP - Real-Time Protocol
RTP is a low latency transport protocol often used in live streaming. While Backstage supports this protocol, SRT is the prefered transport for high quality or secure content.
