June 2022
Here’s what’s new in our latest version of Backstage:
Make the unfamiliar, familiar
Using a blend of approachable language, reworked descriptions, assistive text and resource links, we are tapping into our user-friendly voice to help demystify how Backstage functions, providing users more support, additional context and a clearer understanding of our tools and features.
Design for quick-actions & intuitive experiences
You can now right-click on any object in Layout Editor to perform quick-actions like “Copy,” “Paste,” “Rename” and “Delete” from the dropdown menu. We’ve also included some keyboard shortcuts to make the experience faster and easier to use.
Identify common experiences
Right-click anywhere within a selected object in your layout, or use the Context Dropdown Menu (ellipses icon), to perform common actions including:
Copy Selector: HTML ID
Copy Selector: Core ld
Rename Module
Convert into a Group
Delete
Embrace the Dark Side
Yes, we now have Dark Mode! Save energy, and your eyes, using Dark Mode in Layout Editor and Flow Controller.
Purple Rain
We are exploring more branded colors and trying to showcase our personality a bit more in Backstage. We hope you like the Color Purple!
Fun fact: Purple is the color associated with royalty, or “The Royal, ’We.’” The Dude Abides.
Supporting the guest experience
Let’s start the show… with a default show and spend less time on activities like initial show setup. We also included a navigation menu in Attendee Management to help users easily navigate to other key areas of Backstage, including quick-access to the Attendee page.
Quick-wins & Layout Editor cleanups
We have added a top-bar within Layout Editor so users can easily go back to the Overview page to access show and site controls, or navigate to other surface areas within Backstage. We’ve also included the site name and page name alongside the site preview CTA button and profile menu within the new top-bar.
Users will also notice several general cleanups to the navigation rail and drawer, properties side sheet, form fields, modals, and design canvas as we continue to evolve our global design system. It is now more intuitive where to drag-and-drop modules on the page, or how to interact with selected objects in your layout while using Layout Editor.
We’ve also zeroed in on some regularly taken actions by our Power Users within Layout Editor and found solutions to create a more frictionless workflow. Users can now more easily save changes to module properties, or quick-copy object IDs, to reduce the number of steps taken when completing their work.
Assets, not ASSets
We now support multiple media assets, including image, video and audio files types, for upload in Asset Management. And to ensure clear user feedback, and ultimately, upload success, we are signaling to users whether their file uploads are in-progress, successful or have encountered errors with alert dialogs for error handling. We’ve also built an upload drawer that opens up when a user uploads files for keeping track of their uploads and indicating upload status.
The right-hand side sheet has also been improved to provide a quick-copy action for copying asset URLs, a delete button, and a thumbnail preview. There’s also general file information listed out, including details like the file name, media type, upload date and file size to provide users with helpful info.
Lastly, users can easily view their assets by media type in grid- or list-views, multi-select assets from their list and perform bulk actions, like bulk delete.
Thank you!
